PROJECTS by TYPE: EDUCATION: • COLLEGES + UNIVERSITIES: Recreation Center at Hofstra University

The Hofstra Recreation Center, located in a 1990 “Butler Building,” has been transformed into an energy-efficient, modern athletic facility by renovating the existing spaces, adding a new pavilion to expand the existing lobby, and constructing a new 7,000 sf addition.

We reorganized the administrative offices, the weight room and cardiovascular program spaces, integrated information and A/V technology throughout the building, and replaced the indoor track with a recycled rubber track. To create synergies between program spaces, existing opaque walls have been replaced throughout with metal and glass partitions to maximize transparency.

The new two-story lobby on the south welcomes students and contains a spacious lounge on the upper level. The addition on the north side contains four barrel-vaulted spaces for the multi-purpose studio, the spinning room, and an expanded weight room. The new additions are flooded with natural light from expansive windows and skylights above the circulation space.
