Multiple Projects
An assessment of the North Shore School District resulted in a $30 million bond project. The major focus was the reinvention of Sea Cliff Elementary School.
Sea Cliff was constructed in the 1920s in the Art Deco style. It was a simple three-story, T-shaped building with double-loaded corridors. Because there was no available land on which to construct a new school, we found a way to expand the school to accommodate 400 students, remediate structural issues, create classrooms that meet state standards, and respect the original Art Deco style.
We maintained the Art Deco main facade, replaced the old wings on each side of the central "T" with new, larger single-loaded classroom additions. The new plan created two courtyards for passive recreation and outdoor education. The glass walls in the corridors of the new additions overlook the courtyards, and bring natural light deep into the school, enlivening the circulation.
