BERMAN STUDENT CENTER at MANHATTANVILLE COLLEGE

Berman Student Center
Manhattanville College
Purchase, NY

Project Information

Manhattanville College is an undergraduate school serving approximately 1,700 students on a 90-acre campus.  The new Berman Student Center forms the east gateway to the college campus.  It's placement between a dormitory and a dining hall created a new bi-level quadrangle that is used for passive recreation.

The 33,000 sf building houses spaces for fitness, exercise, the performing arts, and creative arts.  It was designed with large expanses of exterior and interior glazing to promote transparency and visibility. The glass curtain wall in the lobby creates synergy with the quad and brings daylight deep within the building.  The fitness center on the second floor has a full height glass wall that borrows natural light from the lobby and its mezzanine.  Additional windows in the fitness center provide views of the campus; clerestories in the space maximize daylight.

The building achieved LEED Gold certification; it is sustainable and energy efficient.  A significant portion of its electricity is generated by roof-mounted photovoltaic panels.
